A TEAM of swimmers is preparing for the ultimate challenge by swimming the Channel to raise money for a fund set up in their friend's memory.
The group will attempt a relay crossing between Folkstone and Calais to raise money for the research fund set up in memory of Jodie Adams, who died in 2006 from a brain tumour.
Jodie, from Cottingham, was 28 when she died and her friends' latest fundraising effort on June 23 will see the group hitting the high seas to bring home more treasure – but they are looking for anyone who can help cover their costs.
Becci Duck, 28, of Kipling Road in Kettering, first came up with the idea but when she discovered Channel swimmers have to complete a relay before they can swim solo, she got others involved.
She will be joined by Matthew Duck, Chris Dunbar, Dominic Crew, Adam Smith and Jodie's brother, Sam Adams.
Jodie's mother Heather is training the group, who are preparing by swimming six days a week and taking cold showers.
All of the group have a swimming background and Mr Crew has swum the Channel himself before.
Miss Duck said: "I'm petrified of the sea so
I'm feeling quite nervous.
"I won't even go in the sea when I'm abroad but I'm sure I'll get over it.
"We all have a swimming background, though some of us haven't done it for years.
"It's the mental side of things you have to be prepared for – you have your head down in dark water for an hour.
"Jodie was very sporty and she was a county swimmer so it is something she would have loved to have done."
The group have booked a boat for the event and each person has to swim for a maximum of an hour before swapping.
In that hour, they cannot touch the boat and any drinks have to be thrown down to them.
It can take between 12 and 14 hours and can vary between 21 and 30 miles.
It is costing the group £4,000 and because they do not want to use sponsorship money to cover the costs, they are appealing for any businesses or individuals who can help them to call 07709 411514.
